Christmas gifts from Vienna

Glass art by Lobmeyr

Lobmeyr have been producing high-end glassware - from stemware services to flower vases - since 1823. Attractive gifts are the mouth-blown and hand-cut glasses, such as those produced in cooperation with the Wiener Werkstätte. In addition to designs by Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos, the modern designs by Helmut Lang and Stefan Sagmeister are big sellers.

Elegant silver

The Vienna Silver Factory, which was founded in 1882, still produces numerous designs of the Wiener Werkstätte, from Hoffmann silverware to the pumpkin service by Otto Prutscher. Lovers of contemporary designs will also find vases based on designs by the architect Zaha Hadid or a sugar bowl by the artist Erwin Wurm.

Augarten porcelain

Typical gifts from Vienna simply have to include Augarten porcelain. Augarten is one of the oldest porcelain manufactories in the world. Just as it was 300 years ago, Augarten porcelain is still made and painted by hand today. A popular souvenir is the famous melon service by Josef Hoffmann from 1929. The figures and cans based on the designs by Viennese design agency Mostlikely make for pretty gifts.

"Sisi stars"

In the famous portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Empress Elisabeth, better known as "Sisi", is wearing several diamond stars in her hair. The original "Sisi stars" were made by Köchert, the court jeweler, for the imperial couple's first wedding anniversary. Now the Köchert jewelers have reissued an exclusive edition of the diamond stars as brooches, pendants or hairpins. "Diamond stars" adorned with Swarovski crystals are somewhat more affordable. These are available in various forms, such as barrettes, collier or brooch in the Sisi Museum at the Hofburg, where the original painting is on display.

Original Vienna Snow Globes

In 1900, Erwin Perzy produced the first Vienna Snow Globe. Meanwhile, these glass globes have conjured up millions of smiles with their romantic winter themes. The most beloved themes are such Vienna trademarks as the Giant Ferris Wheel and St. Stephen's Cathedral. Along with the standard designs, which are available in four sizes, Erwin Perzy III continues to produce special editions: for films, weddings and even for former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Viennese Delicacies in Miniature

Altmann & Kühne has shrunk the confectionary: The Vienna confectionery founded in 1928 specializes in "Liliput confectionery". The small, hand-made delicacies are packaged in beautiful containers that bear classic designs from the Vienna Workshop. Boxes with Christmas patterns are also now available. Additionally, the Altmann & Kühne store located am Graben is worth seeing.
