Important information for airport travellers from September 2026

During the extended closure of a main section of the S-Bahn line through Vienna, trains will not stop at the stations Rennweg and the central hub Wien Mitte/Landstraße. This will results in changes to the usual train connections from Vienna Airport to the city center, in particular to the airport express train City Airport Train (CAT) and the S7 airport S-Bahn/REX 7 line.

City Airport Train (CAT) – transfer with premium replacement buses

From September 7, 2026, to October 31, 2027, the City Airport Train will operate a replacement service using comfortable premium buses between Vienna Airport and the Wien Mitte/Landstraße station, running at more frequent intervals. Up to five buses per hour will run in each direction. This will provide a fast, direct connection between the airport and the city-center hub Wien Mitte/Landstraße (offering connections to subway lines U3 and U4). 

Departure times of the CAT replacement buses:

From Vienna Airport to Wien Mitte:
Daily from 06:10 to 07:00 every 15 minutes 
From 07:00 every 12 minutes (5 per hour) until 19:00.
From 19:00 every 15 minutes until midnight. Last bus departs the airport at 23:37.

From the City Air Terminal (Wien Mitte) to Vienna Airport:
Daily from 05:30 to 07:00, every 15 minutes from Wien Mitte
From 07:00 every 12 minutes (5 per hour) until 19:00.
From 19:00 every 15 minutes until midnight. Last bus departs Wien Mitte at 23:15.

Unfortunately, the CAT City Check-In at Wien Mitte/Landstraße station cannot be used during this period.

Regional Express (REX 7) and S-Bahn line S7

The REX 7 Regional Express runs from Vienna Airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof in around 20 minutes. The station is well connected to the public transport network (connections to subway line U1, streetcar and bus lines).  

The trains on the S7 airport S-Bahn line run from Vienna Airport on a shortened route to St. Marx station, which is outside the city center. There are transfer options to streetcar lines 18 (towards Hauptbahnhof) and 71 (towards the city center). It is also possible to continue by bus 74A into the city center to Landstraße station (connections to subway lines U3 & U4). The nearest subway station (U3) is around a 10-minute walk from the St. Marx stop.

Long-distance trains: ÖBB Railjet and Intercity-Express 

The Railjet and Intercity trains operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) run twice an hour, providing nonstop service from Vienna International Airport to Vienna Central Station (with a connection to the U1 subway line) in about 15 minutes, or to Vienna Meidling Station (with a connection to the U6 subway line) in just under half an hour.

Bus connections with the Vienna Airport Bus

Vienna Airport Bus services operate three main routes, providing direct connections from the airport to various parts of the city and offering good links to Vienna’s public transport network. Convenient, for example, for destinations in north-eastern Vienna, as well as for visitors to the VIECON – Vienna Congress & Convention Center, Austria Center Vienna and the Vienna International Center (UNO-City Vienna). Early morning and night services mean buses run almost around the clock. 

Line 1: Vienna Airport – Wien Hauptbahnhof (connection to subway line U1) – Wien Westbahnhof (connections to subway lines U3, U6)
Fast connection in around 40 minutes to the most important international and national rail services. 

Line 2: Vienna Airport – Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (connection with subway lines U1 and U4)
Direct connection to the historic city center and the Danube Canal in 22 minutes. 

Line 3: Vienna Airport – Wien Kaisermühlen VIC - Vienna International Center (connection to subway line U1) – Donauzentrum (connection to subway line U1)

Tip for travellers

To be on the safe side, please allow a little extra time for travelling to and from the airport, and check your chosen connection before you set off.
