Taxis in Vienna

Cabs can be hailed at the roadside, at a cab rank or ordered by phone or app to your chosen location. Taximeters are used to calculate the fare. It is also possible to agree a fixed price if you book in advance.
Only use taxis with a number plate that starts with “W” and ends with “TX”, “ATX”, “BTX”, “CTX” or “DTX”. This ensures it is a licensed Vienna taxi.
All of Vienna’s cab ranks are displayed on the interactive city map. Passengers can choose any vehicle at a cab rank.

What you should know as a cab passenger

In Vienna, the most important obligations of cab drivers are enshrined in law and must be carried in cabs as a written document. These include allowing cashless payment and the obligation to provide transportation and assistance with loading and unloading luggage. In addition, QR codes must be clearly visible from every seat in a Vienna cab. These allow passengers to give direct feedback about their ride or check that they are traveling in a licensed Vienna taxi. You can recognize one when you get in by the taxi roof sign and by the Vienna number plate, which ends with “TX” or “ATX”, “BTX”, “CTX” or “DTX” (W- xxxTX, W- xxxATX, W- xxxBTX, W- xxxCTX, W- xxxDTX).
Please remember that smoking is strictly prohibited in official Vienna cabs!

FAQs about taking a cab in Vienna

What rights do cab passengers have?

Official cabs are obliged to carry an information card listing the most important passenger rights. These are:

  1. The name of the company, address, license plate number and cab driver’s license must be visible on the dashboard.

  2. When you pay, you should always be given a receipt without having to ask for one.

  3. It must always be possible to pay by card.

  4. Cab drivers have an obligation to provide transport: The cab must take you to your destination unless you smoke in the vehicle or act in an aggressive or dangerous manner.

  5. The cab must always take the fastest route, unless a different route is agreed. A navigation device must be used if requested by the passenger.

  6. The cab driver must assist with loading and unloading luggage and, if necessary, with getting in and out of the cab.

  7. The seats, footwell and luggage compartment of the vehicle must be available for passengers.

What payment methods can be used in a cab?

In a Vienna cab you can pay cashless (with debit card, credit card, voucher, company card) or with cash.

How do you recognize an official cab?

Cabs have a black sign on the roof with the word TAXI in yellow on both sides. The sign is illuminated when the cab is available. If a cab is reserved, occupied or out of service, the sign is switched off.
