The Marschallin spends a night with her young lover Octavian. In the morning, Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau disturbs the idyll and asks her to find a suitable bearer of the silver rose for his bride Sophie, the daughter of the rich Faninal. The Marschallin suggests Octavian and reflects melancholically on transience. Octavian and Sophie immediately fall in love. As Sophie rejects Ochs, a trap is set for him. In the end, the Marschallin renounces Octavian with a heavy heart and makes the young couple's happiness possible.
