Explore Vienna through dance with the Strauss Waltz Challenge

Want to experience Vienna in three-four time? This is possible on the occasion of the 200th birthday of the waltz king Johann Strauss Sohn, whose waltzes and operettas gave the music world a very special attitude to life. The Strauss Waltz Challenge lets you discover the Vienna of Johann Strauss II in a completely new way. The “Strauss Waltz Challenge” is available in ivie, the city guide app for Vienna, which allows you to experience the full breadth of Vienna.

The challenge involves visiting special places in Vienna that played an important role in the life and work of Johann Strauss II. And here’s how it works: in order to score points for the challenge, you have to check-in digitally at 5 Strauss locations across Vienna with your smartphone and correctly answer 3 quiz questions at each one. There is also an augmented reality challenge at the Johann Strauss monument in Vienna’s Stadtpark, to complete which you have to dance a waltz, among other things. Prepare to be surprised!

Exclusive prizes are waiting to be won: 40 Johann Strauss goodies will be raffled off each month between all the participants who reach the minimum number of points. These include Strauss soaps, Strauss fans and Strauss espresso cups. You need to score maximum points in order to be eligible for the main prize. The main prize is a weekend in Vienna for two people at the legendary Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn, which is located on the very spot where Johann Strauss premiered many of his works. Here’s a tip from us: if you want to get all the questions right first time, listen to the Johann Strauss Audio Walk, which is also available on ivie.

Must-visit locations

Numerous locations in Vienna are dedicated to Johann Strauss II. Be it the Johann Strauss Monument in the Stadtpark, one of Vienna’s most popular photo spots. Johann Strauss’ former apartment, now a museum, opens its doors on Praterstrasse to visitors. The Musikverein, the venue of the famous New Year’s Concert, is also closely associated with the music of the Strauss dynasty. A total of 13 Strauss operettas were premiered at what is now the Musiktheater an der Wien. Also on the list is the Volksgarten Clubdiscothek, the site of the premiere of one of Strauss’ most famous works. And the House of Strauss is an original venue where Strauss used to perform. Today it houses a museum dedicated to the Strauss dynasty, as well as a restaurant and concert venue.

These 6 locations must be visited if you want to score maximum points. It is not necessary to enter the museums, concert halls and clubs to complete the check-in process. The check-in will work within a distance of 100 meters from the locations.
