Nature and forest in Schönbrunn Zoo

Schönbrunn Zoo not only offers a home for exotic animal species. Under the motto "On the trail of nature", the nature trail provides visitors with interesting information and impressions from the world of fish, birds and amphibians which are native to our latitudes.

Thus there are three pond aquariums, in which fish such as brook trout, wild carp and pike can be experienced up close. Fancy hobnobbing with the trees of the Vienna Woods? The canopy trail offers you the opportunity to do this. Walk right through the canopies of the trees in the Vienna Woods on a 10 meter-high and 160 meter-long suspension bridge and also enjoy a wonderful view of Schönbrunn Palace and Vienna.

You'll also find yourself at eye-level with numerous bird species such as the Great Tit and the Green Woodpecker. Walk a little further and you'll arrive in the secretive world of the amphibians. The open-air terrariums are home to cross adders, salamanders and horned adders - the most impressive of Austria's poisonous snakes. In sunny spots, you might even catch a glimpse of the shimmering green lizards.

Tip: The nature trail is also an experience for children. Apart from the many impressions, there is also a fire salamander climbing wall and a cobweb for clambering on.

Since May 2011, it has also been possible to enjoy the natural experience of the educational forest trail. Somewhat hidden - between the penguin enclosure and Tirolerhof - is the most heavily frequented piece of forest in Austria, which was brought to the world's attention as part of the "International Year of the Forest". Each year, over 1.5 million people walk through this forest. Four art installations highlight the various aspects of the forest: from the forest as a place to live, to its sustainable use, to the inspiring and meditative effect of the forest.
