Gustav Klimt in Vienna
Belvedere
With a total of 24 works, the Belvedere owns the biggest and most important collection of Klimt paintings in the world. Among them is Klimt's 180 x 180 cm masterpiece "The Kiss", which can be marveled at in the Upper Belvedere, where it is on permanent display.
Leopold Museum
One of Klimt's main works, "Death and Life", can be seen in the Leopold Museum alongside many other paintings by the Art Nouveau genius.
Wien Museum
Gustav Klimt's "Pallas Athene" is just one of the paintings that can be seen in the Wien Museum. The museum also happens to own the world's biggest collection of Klimt drawings: it calls 411 of them its own.
Secession
The Secession building is one of Vienna's most stunning attractions. Fans of Klimt, a co-founder of the movement, will find his world-famous 1902 Beethoven Frieze there. This cycle, dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, adorns three walls and measures approximately 34 by 2 meters.
Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum)
The stairwell of the Kunsthistorisches Museum is of particular interest to Klimt fans. Here 40 spandrel paintings and other decorative works adorn the narrow sections of wall between the arches and columns. Eleven of these were completed by Gustav Klimt, and the remainder by his brother Ernst and Franz Matsch. The images depict the history of art and applied arts from their ancient Egyptian beginnings to the modern age.
Burgtheater
Valuable sketches by Gustav Klimt for the ceiling paintings above the grand staircase of the Burgtheater were discovered in the attic of the theatre in the late 1990s, rescuing this priceless trove of studies, including the artist's only self-portrait, from destruction. Today these sketches are on display in a dedicated Klimt room which can be seen as part of a guided tour that also takes in the ceiling paintings above the grand staircase.
MAK - Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna
Josef Hoffmann and Gustav Klimt joined forces to work on the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Between 1905 and 1909 Klimt designed the Stoclet Frieze. His nine study sketches are on display in Vienna at the MAK. The MAK also owns the estate of the world-famous Wiener Werkstätte which contains studies, model books, photo volumes, original fabric patterns, embroideries and the full company archive.
In addition, important works of Gustav Klimt are permanently on display in the Upper Belvedere, in the Wien Museum and in the Leopold Museum.
