In recent years, it has been evident that enthusiasm for photographic art has been continuously growing in Vienna, especially among younger visitors. And this fall, there’s no getting away from photography in Vienna. This is because, as part of the Foto Wien festival, over 100 participating institutions will be inviting visitors to sample their extensive program. The festival is being organized for the second time by Foto Arsenal Wien. It is Vienna’s new exhibition venue for photography, which opened only in March 2025 and also serves as the festival’s headquarters.
Foto Wien, Austria’s largest photography festival, takes place every two years, this autumn from October 3 to November 2, with some events on the schedule starting earlier or ending later. The festival turns the entire city into a vibrant platform for photographic images. Museums, galleries, universities, and other institutions offer a diverse program to celebrate photography in all its facets. The collective motto is “dynamic futures”. It’s about the radical transformation in the way images are created and the impact this is having on our society. After all, photographs have always given rise to speculation. From the first images of the lunar surface to X-rays, microphotography, and today’s images generated by artificial intelligence.
Foto Wien is part of the European community project called “European Month of Photography”.
The festival kicks off with the Opening Days (October 4/5). Alongside a wide variety of events at each institution, it is above all the numerous photo exhibitions that will attract plenty of visitors. Here are some of the highlights:
- Science/Fiction – A Non-History of Plants at Foto Arsenal Wien (Oct 3 – Jan 18): Over 40 international artists invite visitors to explore the boundaries between science, art, and speculative imagination
- World Press Photo 2025 at WestLicht (Sep 12 – Nov 9): the most important showcase of international press photography, taking place for the 24th time at WestLicht
- Lisette Model. Retrospective at the Albertina (Oct 30 – Feb 22) about one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, Vienna-born and US émigré Lisette Model
- Where Have All the Flowers Gone... 80 Years After the War – Photographs by Roger Cremers at Museum Judenplatz (Aug 5 – Jan 18): a special exhibition by the Dutch photographer on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in 1945
- Two Views on Plants at the Natural History Museum Vienna (Sep 24 – Mar 1): fascinating 3D photographs by cinematographer, director, and photographer Sebastian Cramer
