City oases in summer

Just a few paces from Vienna's old city, trendy restaurants and bars along the Danube Canal provide that Riviera feeling with sandy beaches, music, cool cocktails and delicious food. Strandbar Herrmann at the Urania beckons with deckchairs, hammocks, lots of sand, and brunch at the weekend.

On the Badeschiff (pool boat) a few steps further along, an outdoor pool and refreshing drinks on the top deck are an attraction on hot summer days. On the shoreline right opposite the pool boat, the pop-up restaurant It's All About The Meat Baby offers excellent burgers and cocktails from mid-May. Situated right alongside is the well-stocked wine bar "Pub Klemo am Wasser". The Motto am Fluss at the mooring point of the Twin City Liner is another hot-spot, with every seat on the terrace hotly sought-after in summer.

On the other side of the Danube Canal, the Adria Wien beckons with burger and boccia lanes, while at Tel Aviv Beach it's the Israeli cuisine, cocktails and DJs. Right next door is an Art Nouveau jewel: The garden of the Otto Wagner Schützenhaus is the perfect place to enjoy the evening sun and Viennese cuisine. At the summer location of the trendy eatery Figar – hence the name Figar macht Urlaub (Figar takes a vacation) – there are refreshing salads, tasty treats from the grill and good summer cocktails.

Upstream at the U4 subway station Rossauer Lände is the Summer Stage. Numerous restaurants and leisure offerings provide a mix of pleasure, sport and culture, as well as relaxed view of the water.

Another good place to relax is the MuseumsQuartier: Hanging out in venues under the open sky, chilling out on trendy loungers, playing boules and listening to the weekend sounds of the DJs on the side – that's modern Viennese gemütlichkeit.

Right around the corner, the Volksgarten Pavillon is a tip for hot summer nights. The pavilion and its terraces form a green oasis with its own stream in the center of the city and were designed in the 1950s by the renowned architect Oswald Haerdtl. In the evenings, a wide range of DJ crews play at the turntables, with a different musical focus on each day of the week. Already legendary: Das Techno Café on Tuesday.

The biggest beach club in the city is Sand in the City on Heumarkt. Beneath palm trees and on the finest sand, people come to play volleyball, pump iron at the fitness facilities and refresh themselves afterwards at the food stalls. DJs provide the right atmosphere during the evenings.

Something's also happening on Danube Island: The Copa Beach has been created here with sand beaches, deckchairs, parasols, palms and pool area. Culinary catering, cool drinks and Ibiza sounds to match the sunset are provided by the offshoots of city center restaurants such as Figar geht baden and Le Troquet. This year, the Copa Beach also has a beach bar called Cocobello, which serves a range of classical cocktails. Stand-up paddling is also really popular here.
