MuseumsQuartier, central courtyard

Eating out in the MuseumsQuartier

The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) is not only one of the largest cultural areas in the world with fantastic museums, it is also something akin to the living room of the residents of Vienna. It’s a great place to meet for a meal or a drink. And as soon as the weather permits, people simply hang out on the popular MQ furniture in the inner courtyard. Situated on the edge of the city center in the former imperial court stables, the MuseumsQuartier brings together establishments from a wide range of art disciplines, restaurants, cafés and stores in a post-modernist combination of baroque buildings with modern architecture over an area covering 90,000 m².

Food & drink in the MQ

  • After a visit to marvel at Schiele and his fellow artists in the Leopold Museum, the Café Leopold invites you to stop by. Café Leopold offers an exciting mix of Asian and international cuisine. In summer guests can sit in the garden next to the water feature.
  • A classic on the Viennese bistro scene is the Glacis Beisl – somewhat hidden away at the back of the MuseumsQuartier. The very best of Viennese cuisine awaits diners here. The outdoor dining area with its old chestnut trees is one of the most beautiful in Vienna.
  • The Lil’ Italy restaurant focuses on pizza and pasta. The rooms at the rear are located in the former Imperial Lodge, where Emperor Franz Joseph I used to watch his horses training in the Winterreithalle (Winter Riding Hall). The stucco ceilings are a vestige of this period.
  • The MQdaily invites visitors to take a short break. The wide-ranging menu offers something for every taste. The best place to watch the hustle and bustle on the large square is from the outdoor dining area in the inner courtyard.
  • The Kantine, located right next to a bookshop, is also somewhere to browse through the books you’ve just bought next door.
  • The Dschungel Café is part of the theater for young people of the same name and is a café for the whole family. The food and facilities were specially designed with children in mind.
  • The rooftop bar “Zur Libelle” opens its doors on the viewing terrace at the Leopold Museum – the MQ Libelle – from March 1 to October 31, weather permitting.

A few things to look out for
