Modern coffee art: six trendy cafés in Vienna

In Vienna, classical meets modernity in many places. On the subject of coffee, there's a very special coming together. The world-famous, long-established Viennese coffee house culture is getting some young and trendy competition. Pure tradition, old coffee houses, the Old Viennese attitude to life on the one hand, inventive coffee creations, modern furnishings and a whole new coffee experience on the other. An interesting contrast: In the new coffee houses, no less than good old filter coffee is celebrating a notable comeback as a particularly high-quality, almost artistic brewing method.

We took a look around Vienna's modern cafés and compiled our favorites in a list of seven of the most popular, trendy cafés in Vienna.

Kaffemik

Our first candidate takes us to Zollergasse in the 7th district. Kaffemik is perfectly situated in this hip area. Coffee lovers evidently feel at home there. Which is hardly surprising, because the baristas here are always right on top of the latest coffee trends such as, in particular, high-quality filter coffee. The coffee house is modern and furnished with the bare essentials. There are no unnecessary frills here to deflect from the enjoyment of coffee. By the way, the name is taking from the Greenlandic language.

Wiener Rösthaus

The Wiener Rösthaus is a mix of coffee bar, roast house and shop. "The whole world in a cup", the motto of this place is practiced with particular intensity. Outstanding kinds of coffee from around the world are brought together in the Wiener Rösthaus and roasted directly in Vienna. Friends of cultivated coffee pleasure are perfectly supplied with wonderful coffee here in the restaurant and with freshly roasted coffee to take home, including top-quality accessories from the shop. There are two outlets of the Wiener Rösthaus in Vienna: in the 8th district and in the Prater.

Balthasar

From the Prater, we make our way to Praterstrasse and pay a visit to the Balthasar Kaffee Bar. Truly outstanding coffee comes from probably the most stylish coffee machine in Vienna. However, the finest coffee in this former video store comes as filter coffee. Those who think of Grandma's little kitchen in the community building with inexpensive coffee powder will make eyes at the first cup of Geisha coffee. It isn't considered the champagne of coffees for nothing!

J. Hornig Kaffeebar

The coffee of the Graz-based roast house J. Hornig has conquered many supermarket shelves. Although this ensures the supply of Hornig beans at home, the various varieties are even more effective when prepared by professional hands. Luckily, the 7th district is home to the J. Hornig Kaffeebar. In the modern ambience of this café, guests are served coffee in the classical style from the big machine or as filter coffee at the pour-over bar.

Kaffeefabrik

Small and almost unremarkable, so appears the Kaffeefabrik. Yet those who dare to venture inside will enter a vast world of countless types of coffee. The friendly staff know the personal history of each bean in great detail. Given that the beans are purchased directly and roasted at the company's own roast house in Burgenland, that doesn't surprise us. For the perfect coffee pleasure at home, the various blends as well as all sorts of accessories for ideal preparation can be purchased in the Kaffeefabrik.

CaffèCouture

CaffèCouture has been at home in the elegant Ferstel Passage arcade for a couple of years. The name is made up of the Italian word for coffee and the French word couture, the individual, the custom-made. The multi award-winning barista Georg Branny conjures up a wide range of coffee specialties for his guests. Here, too, there are alternative preparation methods, such as the classical option with filter. This involves letting the coffee flow slowly through a Chemex carafe from the year 1941. Perfect conditions for a wonderful coffee experience.
