Coffee the really modern way

The new coffee shops are quite different from the typical Viennese variety. In a modern ambience, everything revolves around the origins and roasting of the coffee beans and the perfect method for preparing coffee. The trend is often also described as the Third Wave coffee culture.

A hot tip for coffee aficionados is Praterstrasse in the 2nd district. This is where the Tyrolean restaurateur Otto Bayer has opened his pretty coffee bar Balthasar. He prepares the terrific coffee with an iconic Marzocco espresso machine.

Kaffemik is a project set up by a couple of IT experts in the trendy 7th district. Coffee from alternating guest roast houses and even filter coffee are available in this purist establishment. Third Wave Coffee at its finest. Tobias Radinger's Kaffeefabrik on Favoritenstrasse in the 4th district also has a demure ambience. What's special about this place is that it roasts its own coffee. Visually completely different is the Wiener Rösthaus. Surrounded by the flair of a store selling colonial goods, it offers great coffee, which is even roasted right on the premises.

And when it comes to coffee, CaffèCouture obviously has to be on the list. It is the brainchild of Georg Branny, a prize-winning barista who is also known for his coffee cocktails. He presents his visions at two locations: in Palais Ferstel in the 1st district, and in the 9th district including showroom and roast house. In addition to its café at Schottentor, Jonas Reindl also has a second location in the 7th district with its own roast house. Both outlets place a lot of emphasis on the preparation methods and a pleasant ambience. The specialty roast house J. Hornig from Graz is represented in the 7th district with a cool coffee bar in a modern design. The coffee is also roasted in small quantities in front of guests at the Wiener Dependance. Vienna also has something to offer in the area of Third Wave Coffee Culture.
