A Bite of Art – Indulgence in Art

Food is beautiful, especially in art. Under the motto A Bite of Art, the Kunsthistorische Museum Wien shows that art and cuisine have always gone hand in hand. The KHM on Vienna’s Ringstrasse, one of the world’s leading art museums, will take visitors on a delectable journey in 2026. Specifically, through a series of special offerings that the museum will present as part of Vienna Bites

From Easter 2026, a themed trail in the Picture Gallery will trace the long tradition of artistic representations of food and drink through selected paintings by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and many others – as well as other precious art objects (such as Benvenuto Cellini’s world-famous Saliera). After all, food and drink have always been universal themes in art. For centuries, the meal was an expression of social status, power, and wealth. It was a social event and a staged occasion that many masters of art history chose to depict. Occasions such as weddings, births and deaths were accompanied by food and drink and recorded in art. Depictions of food are also used as symbols of the transience of life.

In many cases, the selected works of art are themselves mouthwatering. They depict ingredients for exquisite dishes and beautifully set tables with delicious meals. They are so appetizing that viewers would love to taste them. A booklet will be available from Easter onwards with supplementary information.

Artful indulgence in the Cupola Hall

In addition to the themed trail, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna will also offer artistic & culinary packages in 2026. Starting in January 2026, a monthly themed tour focussing on cuisine in art, paired with either breakfast or fine dining in the museum’s beautiful Cupola Hall café, will be offered at a package price.

Sunday breakfast is offered from January through March and again from September through November. On the fourth Sunday of each month, a themed tour examining the pleasures of the table and the culinary arts takes place before breakfast. A fine-dining dinner is offered from April through June on the first Thursday of each month, served until 10 pm. You can explore the museum on your own or as part of culinary tours.
