Monocle 2026: Vienna Ranks 4th

In June 2026, Monocle published its 19th annual ranking of the world’s most livable cities—and Vienna once again secured a top spot, this time at No. 4. The ranking highlights what sets the city apart: its successful blend of urban development, social responsibility, and cultural openness. Vienna excels as a host city: In May 2026, the capital hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time—in front of some 200 million viewers worldwide. But annual conferences with thousands of participants and cultural events such as Vienna Design Week also underscore Vienna’s important role as an event city.

Among other things, Vienna’s architecture and its unique public housing system, as well as projects to preserve historic buildings, are particularly highlighted. One example is Villa Beer by architect Josef Frank, which opened its doors for the first time in March following extensive restoration. Vienna’s municipal housing remains a European model: new residential complexes are being built, and existing ones are continuously being renovated—more than half of the city’s two million residents live in subsidized housing.

The transportation network is also impressive: driverless X-Wagen trains for the subway and the ÖBB’s Nightjet night trains complement the already outstanding system.

The quality of life in Vienna has been confirmed by renowned international studies for many years. This is demonstrated by consistent top rankings, for example the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Index and Mercer's Quality of Living ranking.
