Vienna – a hiker’s paradise

Hiking through the vines

An experience for the whole family and every age group is: Hiking in and around Vienna. Hiking through the vines to Vienna’s heurige locations makes for a really perfect weekend activity to do during the fall. This is also when the young wine – the heurige as it’s known in German – is pressed and can be tasted in the local wine taverns. But the fun doesn’t stop there – you can also treat yourself to some hot and cold delicacies, such as fresh and savory spreads or hearty home cooking to fill you up after a long hike.

Tip: Between September and October, be sure to try some fresh Sturm – a lightly fermented alcoholic beverage made from red or white grapes, i.e. the precursor to wine.

Hiking trails in Vienna

  • The city hiking trails in Vienna

Even some of the Viennese don’t know about the wine region Stammersdorf with its traditional alleyways lined with wine cellars and optimal transport links such as the tramline 31. Around the 21st district is the City Hiking Trail 5. Along this 10 km route, you will come across fields, vineyards and heurige. The destination is Bisamberg, from where there is a wonderful view of the landscape around Vienna, as well as the city's skyline.

  • Rundumadum hiking trail

In addition to the city hiking trails, the Rundumadum hiking trail also comes recommended. It's a 120 kilometer-long loop hiking trail around Vienna, which is arranged into 24 easy-to-manage stages. The start and finish of each stage can be easily reached on public transport, and the lengths of the individual sections of about three to ten kilometers also make them suitable for easy-going walks. Like, for example, Stage 6, which runs from the Hütteldorf subway station to Lainzer Tor. Two routes of different lengths take you to the Lainz Game Reserve in 2/2.5 hours. Here is where Empress Sisi liked to retreat and the Hermes Villa, which was built especially for her, and the Restaurant are still regularly visited today.
