DJ on the dancefloor

Electronic sounds

Since the DJ duo of Kruder and Dorfmeister introduced the so-called "Viennese Sound" to the world in the 1990s, the city on the Danube has undergone a powerful development on the music front. The loungey downbeat is a thing of the past: The club scene now dances to techno, electrosounds and breakbeats - and most preferably in unusual locations.

Flex is now known across Europe for having one of the best sound systems around. There are no problems with volume in this subway tunnel converted into a club, which in the past encouraged international guests such as DJ Hell, Trentemøller and Carl Craig to deliver supreme performances on the turntables on a regular basis. Nowadays, the musical focus is more on drum and bass and breakbeats.

An underground location has established itself at the entrance to the Prater, in the immediate vicinity of the Giant Ferris Wheel. The fluc and its companion Fluc_Wanne in the basement are dedicated to electronic music, with the program ranging form avant-garde noise performances to wild Indie-Disco parties. The nearby Pratersauna offers a beach club in the summer as well as first-class acts of the electronic music scene all year round.

The Grelle Forelle on Spittelauer Lände stirs up the scene a fair bit and offers a luxury line-up of DJs from the field of electronic music every weekend. Right next door, Das Werk has developed into an alternative club for all varieties of techno. An opportunity to dance and rave is also provided by the club Praterstrasse with a select underground booking.

The rhiz, which is situated under a city rail arch, has been a hotspot of the domestic scene for years, with daily DJ sets and live acts. Also a secret tip and in a somewhat hidden location is the Donau (Danube). It’s easy to walk right past it because there isn’t a single sign outside to show it’s there. Electronic music with a focus on techno can be heard seven days a week in this underground venue. The mix of bar and club is also known for its spectacular visuals and indoor sausage stand.
