Trumpet sounds to the organ
Treasures of the Viennese classical period and traditional Christmas songs sound particularly festive when played on brass instruments. Such as at the Advent concert series Trumpet magic in Advent in the Baroque St. Anne's Church. (Fr, Sa, Su November 25 – December 18 and December 8)
Trumpets in Concert – A Very Special Christmas: festive Baroque music, church music and cheerful Christmas songs are performed on trumpet and organ in the Minoriten Church (December 11, 17 & 18).
More church concerts
On the weekends in Advent, the Capuchin Church also invites you to Advent concerts (November 25 & 26, December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17 & 23). The Wiener Kaiserquartett and solo singing as well as a program of the most beautiful Christmas songs and festive music will get you in the mood for Christmas.
And in Vienna's most famous church, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Bach's Christmas Oratorio is performed on December 1. The musicians of the Harmonia Ensemble Wien also perform a reflective gathering in a chamber music formation with soprano and baritone solos (November 25 – December 17, every Fr, Sa, also December 23).
The Giant Organ inside St. Stephen's Cathedral is played on the Sundays in Advent, with the mighty sounds from more than 12,500 pipes filling the building. The program of the Advent organ concerts ranges from Bach to Franck and the best-known Advent songs. The console stands centrally in the nave and enables a clear view of the organist and his virtuoso playing on the five manuals and pedals.
St. Stephen's Cathedral is also the venue for a Christmas concert highlight: on December 14, the Wiener Symphoniker give the concert Viennese Advent, together with the Vienna Boys' Choir, Chorus Viennensis, and vocal soloists.
The Minoriten Church is the venue for Christmas Spirit – a musical journey through the starry hours of Christmastime. Light, visuals, installations, and music exude a Christmas mood for all the senses. With Cesár Sampson and Lareeze (vocals), Eva Maria Wallisch (harp), Josef Schultner (saxophone), Ines Schüttengruber (organ) and Sona Tamura (piano). (December 19-22)
Vocally powerful
Great emphasis is placed on singing in the world's capital of music. The Vienna Boys' Choir performs the Advent concert series Good Shepherds in its acoustically brilliant MuTh Concert Hall (December 5, 6, 7, 8 & 10). On the program: Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Silent Night".
The full voices of the US ensemble The Christmas Gospel bring pure gospel power to the Karlskirche (Church of St. Charles). With total commitment and temperament, they sing classics such as "Oh Happy Day" and "Amazing Grace" as well as modern soul ballads. (December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17)
Stadthalle shows
- Entertainer Viktor Gernot celebrates a musical pre-Christmas evening in his Christmas Show together with his best friends and his audience. Guaranteed handmade, punchless, and electronic beat-free! (December 11)
- The Kelly Family invite their fans to the Mega Christmas Show. (December 13)
- Christmas ballet programs can also be experienced at the Wiener Stadthalle: The classics The Nutcracker (December 17) and Swan Lake (December 18).
A different kind of Christmas
Show entertainment of a high standard as well as current best-of programs characterize the festival Wintertainment 2022. Music, theater, cabaret, variety and comedy combine to create a varied series of offerings. Christmas elements are included – but discreetly and without the kitsch. If you're looking for alternative programs to traditional Advent concerts then head to the Theater am Spittelberg (December 17-23).
Jazzy Christmas
Christmas is also on the cards at Vienna's jazz clubs: Saxofour stops over at the Porgy & Bess with its 2022 Christmas tour. The four saxophone virtuosos perform Austrian, American, and European Christmas songs with groove, originality, and humor. (December 9)
The Christkind can listen along: Slavko Ninic and the Wiener Tschuschenkapelle give a Christmas Special on Christmas Eve itself at Porgy & Bess. The band is a fixed feature of the Austrian music landscape, famous for exuberant concerts and musical originality. Its repertoire: traditional and self-composed songs of the Balkan countries, from the Mediterranean and Orient, with a touch of Wienerlied and echoes of gypsy jazz. Tip: The Porgy & Bess streams its concerts!
And yet more tones...
