“Before Sunrise” was released 30 years ago and became a cult classic of the 1990s. Directed by Richard Linklater (“Slackers”, “Dazed & Confused”, “School of Rock”), the movie struck a nerve when it was released in 1995. Linklater’s unusual narrative style gave Generation X a unique love story that deals with postmodern relationships and particularly appealed for its authenticity. The dialog in this film is still inspiring today.
A movie with three leading roles
The film was a hit with audiences and experts alike. Linklater was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1995 Berlinale for “Before Sunrise”. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy achieved their big international breakthroughs. And film fans agree that “Before Sunrise” actually has three main characters: the city of Vienna plays just as important a leading role as the lovers Céline and Jesse. “Before Sunrise” has a huge fan base, especially in Asia. It’s an iconic film that attracts countless moviegoers from all over the world to Vienna.
Discover 11 filming locations all over Vienna
The “Before Sunrise Walk” now allows visitors to Vienna to wander through the city in the footsteps of the film. The City Walk guides visitors to eleven different filming locations. The city walk starts at Westbahnhof station, where Céline and Jesse decide to roam Vienna for a night, and ends at the Giant Ferris Wheel, which is the setting for a key scene in the film.
Along the way visitors will find the romantic alleyways of Spittelberg, the record store Teuchtler – Alt & Neu, the classic Viennese coffee houses Café Sperl and Kleines Café, as well as a tram ride along Vienna’s Ringstrasse, the Albertina art museum, the Zollamtssteg over the Wienfluss river and the Maria am Gestade church.
An additional filming location, away from the route, is the Cemetery of the Nameless, which is located on the banks of the Danube on the south-eastern outskirts of Vienna. This is where unidentified dead bodies that were washed up by the Danube were buried. It is a mysterious location that inspired Richard Linklater and achieved national fame thanks to “Before Sunrise”.
