S-Bahn in Vienna
The S-Bahn, which translates as suburban railway, as well as local trains (R, REX), connect Vienna with the surrounding area and complement the city’s network of underground, tram, and bus lines. They are mainly used for commuting and regional transport. The trains run at regular intervals, usually every 15 to 30 minutes, and serve key stations such as Wien Floridsdorf, Wien Meidling, Wien Mitte/Landstraße, Wien Praterstern, or Wien Hauptbahnhof. Of particular importance is what is known as the trunk line, the backbone of the Vienna S-Bahn network. It runs across the city – from Wien Meidling via Hauptbahnhof, Rennweg, Wien Mitte, Praterstern to Wien Floridsdorf – and is served by several lines (S1, S2, S3, S4). The trains run very frequently and allow quick transfers to other means of transportation.
On the network map, the trunk line is marked in dusky pink. The second heaily-used route, the S-Bahn line from Handelskai to Hütteldorf (S45), is marked in light green.
