Open-air cinema

At the annual Music Film Festival, Vienna's City Hall Square becomes a meeting point for music lovers and night owls – with free film screenings and culinary delicacies. The range of music films shown covers everything from opera to pop. The Music Film Festival runs the whole summer long – from July 3 to September 4, 2021.

The Cinema like never before at the Augartenspitz focuses on the connecting nature of the medium of film from July 1 – with works from all epochs and genres. The Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski is honored with an homage. The great Frances McDormand, who received the Oscar for "Nomadland" this year, is also celebrated. There is also an exquisite selection of music films and highlights from the colorful world cinema. Culinary delights are supplied by the Grünstern cinema heuriger.

The open-air movie theater Kaleidoskop is moving from Karlsplatz to the Arena. On 15 evenings this summer, there will be not only the latest drama and documentary films, but also concerts and performances – and all with free admission. The focus is on current film works that bring the diversity of living together in urban spaces to the big screen.

See you outdoors!

This year's Cinema on the Roof of the Main Library on the Gürtel is also given over to Austrian film and begins on July 1 with "Sargnagel - Der Film". Other focal points include animations and black & white films, including classics such as "The Elephant Man".

A traveling cinema in the old tradition is the Volxkino. It has pitched its tents at unusual locations for over thirty years: between market stalls or social housing buildings, in parks or on public squares. Austrian film is the focus of the Volxkino. The event starts on Jodok-Fink-Platz in the 8th district on July 1. In focus this year are the works of female filmmakers. Admission is free of charge on all dates.

The frame[o]ut Film Festival in the MuseumsQuartier presents a colorful cross-section of documentary films and numerous independent films from around the world on 16 evenings in July and August.

dotdotdot, a small festival for short films, is held again in the idyllic garden of the Austrian Folklore Museum. Short films on the topic of utopias will be shown under the motto "This time tomorrow".
