Museums for children: an overview
The ZOOM Children's Museum in the MuseumsQuartier is all about questioning, touching, exploring, feeling and playing to one's heart's content. Much of what is on offer is self-explanatory and can be grasped through observation: the ZOOM Ocean is a diverse play and adventure area for toddlers and pre-school children; in the ZOOM Studio, children can try out a wide range of techniques and materials together with artists. Alternating participatory exhibitions are designed to be largely intuitive and often have supporting texts in English.
The Children's Museum Schönbrunn Palace whisks its visitors away to the everyday life of the imperial family. Information sheets in seven languages (English, French, Italian, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian and Slovenian) provide background information. At the end, the children dress up as princes and princesses - a real imperial photo motif! A tip: The nearby Schönbrunn Puppet Theater offers performances of shows such as Mozart's Magic Flute, Hansel and Gretel, the Children's Fledermaus as well as Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Programs are available in English, Russian, Spanish, French and Italian.
The Museum of Natural History is the place to go for a tour of the magnificent display exhibition rooms and a visit to the Dinosaur Hall. At a morphing station, visitors transform into early humans and can send their "old countenance" to friends via email. Every Sunday at 3:00 pm, visitors aged from 12 years can climb up to the roof of the museum on an English-language tour, from where they can enjoy a wonderful view of the city.
Impressive exhibits, such as steam locomotives, aircraft and a reconstruction of a mining operation, make a visit to the Museum of Technology an unforgettable experience. Waiting for two to six year-olds is the "mini", a play area with fire engine, construction site and screw cylinder.
On a visit to the Kunst Haus Vienna created by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, kids can go on the children's tours (held in German) and then design a colorful dream house in the language-independent workshop and even plant out the roof. At the Leo Kinderatelier (Children's Studio) in the Leopold Museum, children can go on a 30-minute children's tour (held in German) and then create their own art works in the workshop held in the studio (language-independent, registration recommended). In the mumok, children can explore the museum on their own with a borrowed KinderkunstTransporter, a children's art holder that contains drawing and craft materials. Non-German speaking children are also welcome at the German-language workshop held here. Registration required.
In the Belvedere and in the Albertina, puzzle rallies in English invite children to go on a journey of discovery through the museum. English audio guides for children provide exciting information in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Each year during the winter, the Vienna Museum offers free admission to play and learning activities for two to six year-olds. The topics of the play station make reference to the city and the current exhibition program.
At the House of Music, music can be experienced with all the senses. Installations, such as the virtual conducting of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Waltz dice game or the Namadeus name game, in which names are transposed into an original Mozart interpretation, thrill children young and old.
Moreover, at the Dschungel theater for young people in the MuseumsQuartier, the program also includes dance productions, and children from 2 years of age are captivated by the "theater for the very youngest" simply by looking on.
Some museums offer free admission to visitors under 19 years old. The start of a lifelong passion for museums is guaranteed!
