Organic delights in Vienna

There's much more than just food on offer in the Denn's Biomarkt stores: Shop here for vegetables, detergent, fresh meat and toothpaste – all guaranteed organic. Maran Vegan is also a great place to buy organic. If you want to buy organic food without packaging waste, Lieber ohne is the right places for you. We fill the required quantities of flour, cereal flakes, oil, and spices into the containers you bring with you. And if you don't just like shopping organically but also like to eat organically or vegan, you'll find all sorts to sample in the city: Vienna's organic restaurants, organic bakeries and vegan restaurants tempt you in with delicious dishes.

There are refreshing delicacies at the Eis-Greissler stores. Eis-Greissler is now one of Vienna's most popular ice cream parlors. Eis-Greissler uses only its own organic milk and cream to make their twenty or so flavors of ice cream.

Market fans pay heed: The Freyung organic farmers' market is held every Friday and Saturday in the heart of Vienna, where you can buy everything the heart desires, from organic fish to organic wine. Every Saturday, a farmers' market is also held at the Kutschkermarkt, where the focus is on organic products from the region around Vienna. The farmers' market at the Naschmarkt, held every Friday and Saturday, offers organically reared fish, old breeds of chicken kept in a species-appropriate way, mountain cheese from small, traditional dairies, handmade ham and sausages, old English rose varieties and much more. At the Karmelitermarkt in the 2nd district, for example, a farmers' market has established itself on Saturday mornings, where rare vegetables, herbs or meat can be bought. But that's not all the markets there are in Vienna.

Did you know that 31% of the agricultural land in Vienna is organically farmed?

Wine that is processed in accordance with biodynamic guidelines and with a high claim to quality is grown in the vineyards of the Wieninger Estate. The vintner also opts for organic production methods at his Hajszan Neumann vineyard. This means dispensing entirely with systemic sprays and instead protecting plants using such natural extracts as teas. Vintner Rainer Christ runs his own organic vineyard on the Bisamberg called Petershof. The pioneer of Austrian organic wine-growing took over the vineyard in time for the 2014 vintage and now runs it under the name "Petershof by Weingut Christ".

The Weingut Zahel winery is also managed according to biodynamic guidelines and is currently the only winery in Vienna to be fully certified according to the strict Demeter guidelines. The Cobenzl Winery has also made the move to entirely organic wine production. And a visit to the wine tavern of Bio-Weinbau Obermann organic vineyard is also worthwhile.
