Vienna tips for you:

Johann Strauss walk

The traces of waltz king Johann Strauss are everywhere to be found in Vienna: from the golden memorial in the Stadtpark and his original home to other music hotspots.

At the House of Music, Vienna's interactive sound museum, Johann Strauss is also presented, of course. The "virtual conductor" lets visitors conduct the Vienna Philharmonic as they play "The Blue Danube Waltz".

The premiere of Johann Strauss' opera "Ritter Pázmán" was performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1892. In 1894, the audience congratulated its Waltz King on his 50th anniversary as an artiste with thunderous applause lasting several minutes. And on 22 May 1899, the 74 year-old Strauss conducted the overture to his "Fledermaus".

The Collection of Historic Musical Instruments houses the only remaining original recording of the Johann Strauss Kapelle: the “Voices of Spring Waltz", immortalized on the wax cylinder of a phonograph, which Thomas A. Edison had invented in 1877. And "The Blue Danube Waltz" plays before a "Living Picture" from 1860.

The Theater an der Wien was the venue for the premieres of almost all operettas by Johann Strauss – including "Die Fledermaus" and "The Gypsy Baron".

Johann Strauss married his second wife, Angelika Dittrich, in the Karlskirche (Church of St. Charles).

Nowadays, the New Year's Concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein is watched by millions of people around the world each year. A traditional encore: Strauss' "The Blue Danube Waltz". In January 1870, Johann Strauss personally conducted the waltz "Freut Euch des Lebens" (Life let us cherish), which was composed for the opening ball of the newly constructed Musikverein building.
