Street festivals in Vienna

During the warmer months, the city’s heartbeat can be felt on every street corner almost every day. A myriad of festivals, markets and events with different attractions take place all over Vienna. It is well worth getting off the beaten tourist track and exploring the city. Here is just a small selection:

Flaniermarkt Neubaugasse

May 3 & 4 and September 27 & 28, Neubaugasse
The market in Neubaugasse has now become a permanent fixture of Vienna’s outdoor events. Twice a year, visitors can hunt for bargains, feast on the varied selection of food on offer or visit the many small stores in the immediate vicinity.

June 1, from 2.00 pm, Esterházygasse
The LGBT community will not only be celebrating at Vienna Pride on Ringstrasse, but also in Esterházygasse in the immediate vicinity of the popular Mariahilfer Strasse shopping street. A diverse program of supporting events, refreshing drinks and good food, as well as opportunities to obtain advice and information ensure that the festival will open hearts and broaden horizons.

June 1 – 23, all over Vienna
In June, Vienna will be showing just how much culture it has to offer. The events will take place in each (!) of Vienna’s districts – beginning on June 1 in the 1st district and ending on June 23 in the 23rd district. What’s more, admission is completely free. The program will include live music, readings, photo exhibitions as well as picnics and activities for children and families.

Jewish Street Festival

June 9, Judenplatz
On June 9, Judenplatz in the city center will be transformed into a kosher festival mile. Live music, a program of children’s events, Jewish folk dancing on the stage and stalls run by Jewish associations, artists and designers in front of the stage will create a unique atmosphere in Vienna’s festival summer.

Freihausviertel Festival

June 27 - 29, Schleifmühlgasse
The Freihausviertel Festival, one of Vienna’s largest street festivals, has achieved cult status. It is worth stopping by not only for a few drinks and good food surrounded by sidewalk cafés and live music, but also for a spot of shopping and exploring the surrounding neighborhood.

Südwind Street Festival

June 29 & 30, Campus of the University of Vienna – “Altes AKH”
The whole world is invited to the Südwind Street Festival. Music and food from all over the world on the one hand, sustainable and fair-trade products on the other. There will also be plenty of presentations, workshops and information on topics such as development policy, human rights and environmental protection. Every ticket wins a prize in the raffle!

Culture Summer

July 4 – August 11, all over Vienna
A total of nine open-air pop-up stages will once again host an abundance of cultural events this summer. The Water Tower in Favoriten, the Reithofferpark and the Währingerpark will be among the venues once again. The program includes cabaret, literature, music, dance, theater and much more – all with free admission.

EuroGames Village

July 17 – 20, Karlsplatz

This summer, some 4,000 LGBT athletes will be competing for medals at the EuroGames in Vienna. At the heart of the event is the EuroGames Village on Karlsplatz. In addition to the opening and closing ceremonies, various events will be held here over the course of four days, ranging from concerts and film screenings to discussions.

Popfest

July 25 – 28, Karlsplatz
The square in front of Vienna’s Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) is one of the most popular open-air event locations in the city. The annual Popfest brings a festival atmosphere to the heart of the city with no admission charges or ticket controls. The program features a rich mix of newcomers and “old hands” on the music scene.

Seestadt Street Festival

August 31, Hannah-Arendt-Park
The street festival in Seestadt, currently Vienna’s largest urban development project, is principally aimed at children and families. There will be plenty of entertainment and activities on offer around the green heart of the new district, the Hannah Arendt Park.

Reindorfgassen Festival

September 6 & 7, Reindorfgasse
The Reindorfgassen Festival attracts visitors to Vienna’s 15th district with three stages, walking acts, stalls and a wide range of food and drink. It has been a huge success so far and is now one of the city’s best-known street events.

September 20, residential streets across Vienna
Want to get to know Vienna from a resident’s perspective? Several streets spread across Vienna invite you to a cozy get-together on the seventh day of the Wohnstraße event. The aim of this initiative is to bring inconspicuous public places to life with assistance from committed local residents.

Währinger Street Festival

September 20, Währinger Straße between Gürtel and Aumannplatz
On September 20, cars will have to make way for festival stages and food stalls around the Kutschkermarkt in the 18th district, in amongst the beautiful old buildings on Währingerstraße. A varied program for young and old to round off the summer.

      Guiding system for the visually impaired with special "leading stones" (grooves and knobs), which can be felt with canes or feet - for the passage between the individual artistic institutions on Karlsplatz (e.g. Künstlerhaus, Musikverein) and for crossing the Friedrichstrasse-Lothringerstrasse intersection (which has heavy traffic), the traffic lights have audible signals.
