Brunch and breakfast in Vienna
There is scarcely a more classic way to begin a day in Vienna than with breakfast in a coffee house. Almost all coffee houses offer breakfast, from the classic Viennese version with rolls through to more sophisticated creations. Good examples are Café Museum and Café Florianihof.
However, other restaurants offer the true breakfast experiences. Breakfast from around the world can be enjoyed at the Haas & Haas tea house right behind St. Stephen's Cathedral. More than 30 types of breakfast are on the menu here, all of which are served in the typical national style. The Chinese version with dim sum is served on a banana leaf in a steam basket. Numerous creative breakfast combinations can also be enjoyed at Café Français. Everything is on the menu here - from French Toast to warm, filled baguettes.
The Joma specializes in egg dishes of every conceivable variety. A special tip here are the sophisticated cereals such as Bircher muesli and Amaranth porridge. The breakfast served at Meierei in Stadtpark, which belongs to Restaurant Steirereck, is sensational. Everything has that certain something extra here. There is even a Viennese brunch with ‘beuschel’ (pig’s lights) or goulash.
At Hansen, diners sit surrounded by wonderful plants. The restaurant in the old stock exchange has a varied breakfast menu. Above all the variety of egg dishes is a hit - sometimes truffled with salmon, sometimes with pumpkin seed oil. The Motto am Fluss is also known for its great breakfast and lovely ambience. In addition to creative breakfast combinations and egg dishes, there's also healthy porridge and superfood granola.
Café Drechsler shows what can be made with eggs. From omelets to poached eggs of every variety, everything is on the menu here. And not to forget the sweet breakfast ranging from pancakes to porridge. Breakfast at the Ulrich is extensive. Assorted breads, omelets and smoothies provide variety here.
Brunch at the weekend
The Gerstner Café-Restaurant offers brunch in the magnificent rooms of Palais Todesco every Sunday from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm. All sorts of delicacies are served with a view of the Vienna State Opera. A breakfast as in the days of the emperor awaits visitors at the Sisi buffet in Café Gloriette at Schönbrunn Palace (Su 9.00 am - 11.30 am).
The Sneak-In is also a hot tip for a great Sunday brunch. A wide range of dishes are served here from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm, from grilled vegetables to cake, from rice pudding to fruit salad.
The "Flying Breakfast" at the Labstelle is only held on Saturdays: The kitchen serves small dishes continuously from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm - for a flat-rate price. A breakfast hotspot for vegetarians (but not exclusively so) is the Turnhalle. The eatery in the former gymnasium of a Jewish school offers a sensational vegetarian brunch at the weekend and on public holidays (10.00 am to 1.00 pm or 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm for sleepyheads). The breakfast during the week is also a tip.
